Job purpose

The Director of the Office for Parish Service and Support oversees both Parish Service Specialists (Staff Accountants) as well as Pastoral Planning staff. This office works to serve the needs of parishes and schools within the Archdiocese of Philadelphia by providing pastors and staff with support and information in the areas of pastoral planning and financial management. 

While overseeing the Parish Service Specialists staff, the Director ensures the planning and execution of a variety of financial matters related to parishes and their associated elementary schools. This includes monitoring and offering guidance on financial reporting, budgeting, accounting systems and practices, internal controls and debt restructuring. This position oversees and collaborates with the Assistant Director of OPSS to train and develop Parish Services Specialists as they review financial statements, budgets, capital projects, and debt-service plans of parishes and their associated elementary schools. The Director communicates materials related to financial management and budgeting to OPSS staff and business managers and provides periodic updates to the CFO on the status of various projects and tasks. This position works in collaboration with the Assistant Director to conceptualizer new accounting projects to be implemented at the parish level. As required, this position visits parishes and schools to construct budget meetings, develop plans to address long term sustainability and review other issues.

While overseeing Pastoral Planning staff, the Director works in collaboration with the Associate for Pastoral Planning to support collection of data related to mass attendance, registers population, sacramental information, geographical information and other pastoral figures. This position also works with the Pastoral Planning staff to facilitate requests from other offices and to present pastoral data more broadly. They work to support the development and refinement of collection and reporting formats used to obtain information from parishes.

 

Duties and responsibilities

Ensuring the planning, execution and monitoring of the following processes for all parishes and associated elementary schools:

  • Annual financial reporting
  • Annual budgeting
  • Oversight of the cloud-based financial reporting platform and standard chart of accounts
  • Bi-annual agreed-upon procedures engagements
  • Capital project approvals
  • Calculation of yearly assessment invoices for each parish
  • Monthly assessment analysis
  • Assessment collection and related follow-up as needed by parish
  • Loan refinancing
  • Financially related EthicsPoint reports
  • Approval of Trust Fund withdrawal requests
  • Assist in Grant Thorton audit of Archdiocesan financial statements
  • Financial reporting for PCMR communities
  • Pastoral data collection and analysis
  • Pastoral planning
  • Provide assistance to parishes/schools and business managers
  • Provide assistance to PSS staff with questions outside of their scope
  • Review and approval of capital project requests
  • Review budget packet distributed to business managers
  • Review annual financial review packet distributed to PSS staff and business managers
  • Collaborate with audit firms on various aspects of AUP engagements
  • Review of IPCC budget and allocation of funds
  • Review/guide problem parishes or parishes that need assistance with items outside of PSS scope
  • Serve on board of the Foundation for Catholic Education as an ex-officio Director
  • Ad hoc analysis/reports
  • Assist other offices in Pastoral Center with requests as needed

 

 

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in accounting, finance or a related field

Specialized Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of basic accounting principles; demonstrated experience with financial reporting, internal controls and general accounting: extensive experience with data analysis in Microsoft Excel and strong working experience with Microsoft PowerPoint; Experience with QuickBooks. Working knowledge of Church structure.

Abilities: Superior communication skills and required, both written and oral; ability to think big picture and transform those ideas into detailed plans; ability to maintain confidentiality over parish information; strong analytical and problem-solving skills; demonstrated leadership ability

Experience: 8+ years of accounting experience, 3+ years of supervisory experience
